Discussion:
Outlook 2003/Datebk5 - What Conduit?

Hi,

I don't know if my earlier message got overlooked (or maybe somebody doesn't
know the answer), but I'm trying it again...

I recently got a Tungsten E and also just purchased/installed Office
2003/Outlook 2003 (had been using Office XP).

Anyway, I was trying Agendus Pro for Windows and Palm, alongside of Datebk5.
The "Data Source" for Agendus Pro was Palm Desktop, but the email function
was through Outlook. The "Data Source" for Datebk5 was also Palm Desktop.
Due to constant problems with Agendus crashing, etc., I would like to go
with Outlook 2003 and Datebk5.

There are many messages regarding problems with the Tungsten T3 and E and
Datebk5 syncing with Outlook, but I'm very confused as to what the "right"
setup should be.

What conduit should I use? (i.e., the new Palm Outlook Conduit, Pocket
Mirror Pro 3.1.6), and which native Palm Apps should I be syncing to (i.e.,
the new ones (OS version 5.2.1) or the old ones (as in OS version 3.5.3)?

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Take care,
Kathy

Some
users (like me) are using the new conduits without any problems (but
again, I'm not syncing to Outlook; others who do have reported
difficulty using the new conduits IF they use the "extra" fields that
were added to the databases for the T|E and T3). Others prefer to
use the older conduits because they're using extra fields in Outlook
that sync the way they want to with those conduits.
My compliments on a thoughtful, extensive, and helpful post! I, too, make my living in computers. However, I do use Outlook extensively. When I bought my T|E a week ago to replace my Palm III (mostly because I was out of space, even though I used FlashBuilder III), I was having fits with the new Calendar conduit. My birthdays were not appearing in DB5 at all. dbScan was reporting wierd errors about data not being synched properly (duh-I knew that already!), complaining about a 3rd-party app, etc.

Finally, I got on this usergroup, read about some of the T|E problems, went and downloaded the si version, and got a little smarter about what conduit to use for what. I use the PocketMirror 3.1.6 conduits for:

Calendar, because the default conduit was missing data.
Addressbook, because I want to map 4 custom fields properly into Outlook.
Tasks, because I like the taskpad view in Outlook that shows "active tasks for displayed day" and Pocket Mirror takes DB's due date and makes it Outlook's start date, so all this works.

I use the new conduit for Memos, because now I can have more than 4K memos on my Palm device, and I like that!

Hope all this helps some.

Phil

Thanks, Phil and theseus1976!!

Phil's response was more towards the way I work (mostly on the desktop with
Outlook).

Now, I have another question:

When you say you use the "new Memos" conduit, are you referring to the "new
regular Palm" conduit or the "new Palm Outlook conduit"? Sorry if this is a
stupid question...I'm just so confused with all of the conduits and the DBs
for which they apply.

Again, thanks for the help!!

Take care,
Kathy

It says "Memos (Outlook)" when I click on the HotSync icon in the system tray of my computer. I actually have 8 conduits for Outlook. The 4 conduits that have Outlook as the first word are the PocketMirror conduits, like "Outlook Calendar". The 4 conduits that have Outlook as the second word in parentheses are the Palm Desktop conduits, but there's a place on the installation CD menu to install the Outlook versions. If the conduit doesn't say Outlook somewhere, it's gonna sync with the Palm Desktop, which you probably don't want.

Nah. I was kinda wondering why I had 8 conduits for Outlook, myself, 'til I spent some time with them.

I also have a Tungsten E; I run with the software that came on the
CD with the Palm Outlook 2003 update from the Palm website. I
haven't had a problem yet. I also sync with Lotus Notes at work, but
that is another story. I don't sync with(or use) Palm Desktop.
